Find Balance

Finding Balance (A Life Update)

Since you have decided to embark on this journey with me, I feel it’s only fair that I check in with you every so often.  So here we are, life update #1.

I have what you might call a “one-track mind.”  That is to say that when I get excited about something, I have trouble focusing on anything but the idea in my head.  This is great for big projects that have to get done (so long as the project is interesting to me), but not so great when trying to find balance between work and home life.

For example, now that we’ve adjusted to our “new normal” at work, I’ve been able to get back into what I really love (i.e. NOT COVID result reporting).  The thing is that since I’m loving work so much and I’m working on a super exciting project (you can learn more about that here), I’m finding it extremely difficult to stop working when I get home and just live in the present moment.

Today, as I was leaving the office, I gave myself a pep talk that went something like this:

Alexis, now you are going to transition into post-work mode, which means that you’re going to shut your work brain off, go home, make a super delicious and healthy dinner, put on a facemask, love on your husband and sweet pups, perhaps watch a movie, and end the day with some writing and reflection.

As silly as it sounds, that pep talk truly set the stage for my evening.  Everything I spoke out into existence happened and as much as I can’t wait to get back in the office tomorrow, I know that I will feel 100 times better in the morning having had a much deserved break and time for both my little family and myself.

All this to say, pep talks WORK, focusing on one thing all the time is NOT balance, and so help me, I WILL get my s#*t together.
